Kate Johnson, S. Pearl Sharp
Facing the Pacific Ocean, Santa Monica's Tongva Park is named for the Indigenous People of the region. Media Artist Kate Johnson (1969-2020) was commissioned to create a one-night site-specific video and sound installation in the park. She chose as her location a massive and over 100-year-old tree named 'Morty'. Johnson created the digital animations, music and video, imagining the scenes and scenarios that the tree has seen as well as looking into the 'soul' of the tree; the eons that came before it to sense its presence and its legacy.
